Org. Setting and Reporting

|
The internship is located in the Terrorism Prevention Branch (TPB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria). These internship positions are for an initial period of three months with various reporting dates, starting from January 2016, with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department and the availability of an intern.
The internship is UNPAID and full time.
Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:
• Conduct research on criminal justice aspects of terrorism prevention and on specific counterterrorism related thematic areas
• Contribute to the elaboration of background documents, presentations, briefing notes, summaries, talking points and speeches
• Assist in the preparation of national and regional technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences
• Attend and take notes at meetings, as required
• Perform other tasks, as necessary.

Education
|
|
|
|
Degree in the field of law, criminal justice, international relations, international public administration or closely related field is required. Academic training and/or a keen demonstrated interest in international security is an assent.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation (OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION)
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
