Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
The Chief, Editing Section reports to the Chief, Languages Service. Within delegated authority, the Chief of the Editing Section will be responsible for the following duties:
- Provides policy guidance to the Chief of Service, on conceptual strategy development and management of the implementation of overall strategies and intra and inter-divisional/departmental policies and procedures, and on policy matters related to his/her section. - Plans and oversees the management of the Section’s work; ensures that substantive work programmes and programmed activities are carried out in a timely fashion and comply with the relevant mandates. - Oversees the timely editing of documents and publications to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice. - Advises author departments, senior management and delegations on editorial matters. - Oversees the training of newly recruited and short-term editors and revision of their work. - Provides substantive input in the preparation of position papers and reports for presentation to intergovernmental bodies such as the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budget Questions, Committee for Programme Coordination, Economic and Social Council, the General Assembly and other policy-making organs, as appropriate. - Contributes to the reporting to intergovernmental bodies on programme performance or on substantive issues, as appropriate. - Prepares inputs for the work programme of the Service, determining priorities for his/her Section, and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery. - Carries out administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Section, including evaluation of staff performance, interviews of candidates for job openings, evaluation of candidates and recruitment of temporary assistance. - Recruits staff for Section taking due account of geographical and gender balance and other institutional values. - Manages, guides, develops and trains staff under his/her supervision. - Fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Section and across organizational boundaries. - Represents the Organization at inter-agency meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive-related issues. - Participates in international, regional or national meetings and provides substantive expertise on an issue, or holds substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.

Education
|
|
|
|
A first-level university degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Success in the United Nations Competitive Examination for Editors is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience as an editor, including experience as an editor at the United Nations or another international or intergovernmental organization, is required. Experience in a managerial, supervisory, training or programming capacity is also required.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is required. Knowledge of additional official languages beyond the required two, is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Competency-based interview. A written assessment may be conducted.
|
|
|
|
