Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
The Human Settlements Officer will perform the following functions: 1. Implementation of UN-Habitat's Gender Equality Action Plan by: a. Coordinating preparation of operational plans with specific activities for UN-Habitat and partners including preparation of proposals for funding. b. Coordinating incorporation of gender equality actions into the UN-Habitat biennial work programme and budget, strategic framework, and programme management instruments. c. Identifying priorities, problems and issues to be addressed and proposing corrective actions, liaising with relevant parties, identifying and initiating follow-up actions. d. Ensuring an effective and efficient execution of projects and programmes. 2. Providing strategic policy advice to senior management and other officials by: a. Coordinating policy development, reviewing the assessment of issues and trends, preparation of research studies, presenting information and making policy recommendations. b. Providing guidance to external consultants, government officials and other partners and preparing mission reports related to gender equality. c. Providing technical and management support in gender analysis in human settlement development, and participation in high level consultations aimed at development of housing and urban development policies, strategies and programmes. d. Strengthening of inter-divisional collaboration to achieve better collaboration and coordination of gender mainstreaming work at policy and operational level. 3. Coordinating the design, delivery and evaluation of capacity building programmes on gender mainstreaming in human settlements development for UN-Habitat staff, local authorities, women leaders and other partners. 4. Developing and maintaining relationships with Habitat Agenda partners and promote inter-agency cooperation by: a. Serving as a representative in the area of gender equality and establishing collaboration and partnerships with key stakeholders. b. Providing capacity development support and facilitating networking with partners and programmes contributing to policy dialogues and practical actions at UN- Habitat. 5. Supervising, mentoring, and evaluating staff within the Gender Main straining Unit by: 6. Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master's) in sociology, urban planning, development studies, women/gender studies, economics, law, political science, anthropology, social sciences or related field is required. A first level university degree in combination with 2 years professional and academic qualifications may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience of gender equality and advancement of women in human settlements related fields, in which five years of similar experience is at international level. Experience in policy development, research and capacity building and training in gender mainstreaming is highly desirable
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, and for this post fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French and another UN working language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

This position is funded for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
