This post is located in the Asia and the Pacific Division (APD) of the Department of Political Affairs (DPA). The incumbent reports to a Team Leader / Senior Political Affairs Officer, APD.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Analyses political and related events within assigned countries in the Asia Pacific region, including cross-cutting issues in the region, and develops early warning and policy options for conflict prevention, peacemaking and post-conflict peace-building for the Team Leader and the Chief of APD, and through them to ASG/USG of DPA.
• Draft notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials.
• Assists the Team Leader and the Chief of APD in the provision of substantive political support for good offices, mediation and other political initiatives and activities that may be undertaken by the Secretary-General or his representatives.
• Participates in fact-finding missions, good offices missions and similar assignments. Liaises with relevant Permanent Missions, other UN offices, departments, agencies, funds and programmes.
• Assists the Team Leader by coordinating the Team's work on matters relating to the assigned sub-region.
• Contributes to the furtherance of partnership and cooperation between the United Nations and relevant regional and sub-regional organisations.
• Reaches out to relevant academic institutions and civil society organizations and participates, as necessary, in conferences, seminars and academic fora.
• Assists in administrative budgetary and performance reporting responsibilities within APD.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge of the regional mechanisms and their role in regional and national political developments. Ability to assess the inter-relationship between social, economic and humanitarian programmes and political developments. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area. Experience with report writing is desirable. Experience in working on political issues related to the Asia Pacific region is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
