This position is located in the Division for Palestinian Rights in the Department of Political Affairs. The incumbent works in the Committee Secretariat Section of the Division for Palestinian Rights and reports to the Secretary of the Committee.She/he reports to the Secretary of the Committee (P-5). The principal client for this Section is the Bureau of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, and its Chairman.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
The incumbent collaborates with another professional at the P-4 level and one General Service staff in the Committee Secretariat Section of the Division. The incumbent will be responsible for :
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the countries and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible
•Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press of interest to the Committee. drafting of statements, drafting of technical notes for the Chairman's use in conducting the meetings of the Committee and the Bureau, drafting of technical notes for the Rapporteur of the Committee, preparation of a variety of pre- and in-session documentation, drafting of entries for the Journal and preparation of the Division’s contribution to the annotated agenda of the General Assembly and the Yearbook.
•Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
•Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active on the ground.
•Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, branch or unit such as preparation for the annual observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, s/he will coordinate the various arrangements for the meetings held at Headquarters (HQ), UN Office at Geneva (UNOG) and UN Office at Vienna (UNOV), including the preparation of a Palestinian exhibit at HQ, the presentation of films, and the Chairman’s reception in connection with the observance of the Day.
•Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
•Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations.
•Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to potential disputes and conflicts involving assigned countries or region including assists in the maintenance of the websites of the Division and contributes to the further development of the United Nations Information System on the Question of Palestine (UNISPAL).
•Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
•Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
• Research and gather information on specific issues of interest to the Committee.
• Drafts statements, technical notes for the Chairman's use in conducting the meetings of the Committee and the Bureau, drafts technical notes for the Rapporteur of the Committee.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in the Middle East is required. Experience in servicing meetings and conferences in an international setting is required. Experience in the work, procedure and protocol of UN intergovernmental organs, including the work of relevant political bodies is desirable. Experience with UN committees or legislative procedures is desirable. Experience in event planning and organizing is desirable.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations, The Committee's work is conducted in French. For this post, Fluency in English and French is required.Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

This position is funded for a finite period of one year. Extension of the appointment is subject to
extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
