|
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional levels. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and international community for action. This post is located in the UNEP Executive Office, Secretariat for Governing Bodies and Stakeholders at Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Major Groups and Stakeholders Branch (MGSB) and the overall guidance of the Secretary of Governing Bodies.

|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
1. Coordinate the implementation of the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) cycle: (i) coordinate the organization of the GMGSF; support and facilitate the Regional Consultation Meetings (RCM) as preparatory meetings to the GMGSF, (ii) develop the agendas of the RCM and GMGSF and ensure a balanced participation of RCM and GMGSF, (iii) disseminate United Nation Environment Assembly (UNEA) documents on the theme/topics well in advance to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs); (iv) finalize the CSO Statements and disseminate to UNEA member states; ensure evaluations of meetings are conducted, reports produced, prepare and disseminate meeting reports.
2. Review and develop policies and provide analysis of potential impacts on UNEP’s work: (i) Prepare various written outputs, (ii) Provide substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, (iii) Undertake consultations with CSOs and Member states on issues of stakeholder participation, by planning facilitating workshops and consultation meetings, etc. (iv) Research, analyze and presentsinformation gathered from diverse sources; (v) Prepare conclusions and consolidated reports; (vi) Coordinate the development and implementation of the new UNEP stakeholder engagement policy and the related rules of procedures.
3. Improve UNEP information delivery towards CSOs and ensure timely delivery of relevant political information, regular updates on selected thematic issues and emerging issues.
4. Facilitate an efficient information exchange between CSOs, UNEP and member states.
5. Undertake outreach activities and make presentations on assigned topics/activities.
6. Perform the functions of Programme of work output manager: (i) participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, (ii) coordinate activities related to budget and funding and prepare related documents/reports, (iii) assist in developing the strategy of the Branch and the related programme of work, workplans and reporting for the Branch; (iv) develop funding proposals and identify suitable donors; and ensure progress and financial reporting is done.
7. Based on the new UNEP engagement strategy, provide support to all UNEP Divisions and Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) for the development of innovative and strategic partnerships with CSOs on selected emerging environmental issues : (a) Facilitate the engagement of accredited CSOs with UNEP Divisions for expert input and advice, for the implementation of UNEP’s programme of work; (b) Participate in the review process of the Partnerships Committee to ensure that due diligence processes are ensured; (c) Identify new partners for engaging with UNEP; (d) Contribute to the strengthening of interagency and interdivisional cooperation with CSOs.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in natural sciences or social sciences, such as management or business administration, international relations, economic, environmental management, development studies or related disciplines. A first-level university degree in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
At least seven years’ relevant work experience and progressive responsibility in national or international development, social and/or environmental issues, including working experience with developing countries. Experience in project or programme management, including team, planning and financial management would be an asset.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be
followed by competency-based interview.

Initial appointment against this position is for a period of one year and may be subject to extension.
