The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UNHABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). The post is located in the Office of Director-General, United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Security and Safety Service.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the overall command of the Chief of Service and direct supervision of the Deputy Chief or supervising officer the incumbent will perform overall, armed security functions which include:- 1. Report to the Deputy Chief on all matters and activities of concern planned or taking place within the UN complex. 2. Make recommendations in the formulation of goals and objectives of the Service. 3. Ensure that the established goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with prescribed priorities, time limitations and financial conditions. 4. Determine work schedules and make adjustments; plan coverage for special events, VIP visits in consultation with the Deputy Chief and Assistant Chief of the Service, officials of Secretariat departments and external security representatives. 5. Supervise subordinate personnel and ensure that all posts are properly and effectively encumbered making adjustments in light of operational requirements. 6. Ensure availability of all relevant resources to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the section/unit. 7. Ensure that all incidents and complaints reported are effectively addressed and appropriate measures are taken to curtail reoccurrences. 8. Assume command of emergency or heightened security situations. 9. Assist in the preparation of budget proposals and performance reports. 10. Manage and process overtime and attendance of personnel. 11. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Education
|
|
|
|
Completion of secondary education or equivalent is required with supplemental training in security or military is required. Sound and thorough knowledge of security related matters.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of ten years work experience in areas of security management including investigation, physical security, personal protection, strategic and operational planning and fire prevention. Three years’ work experience in the National Police Force or Military Service is required. Three years supervisory role of Security Lieutenant in UNDSS is preferable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.

Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
