This position is located in the United Nations Appeals Tribunal of the Office of Administration of Justice. The incumbent reports to the Registrar.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the overall authority of the Registrar, the Legal Officer will be responsible for providing substantive, technical and administrative support to the judges of the United Nations Appeals Tribunal in the adjudication of cases. Duties will include: •Handles a range of issues related to the United Nations Appeals Tribunal; Services Judges by preparing background materials and summaries of issues, as required; •Conducts the review of submissions to the Tribunal to ensure that they meet procedural requirements; Assist in responding to complex inquiries and correspondence; Undertakes review, drafts and advises on legal documents and correspondence; •Attends meetings, and give ad hoc advice on emerging issues and questions, as required; Provides legal advice on diverse substantive and procedural questions; •Identifies issues, prepares draft legal texts and handle a wide range of complex legal matters involving interpretation and application of administrative law; •Conducts extensive legal research and provide detailed analysis of cases and jurisprudence; Assists in the publication and dissemination of the decisions, rulings and judgements rendered by the Tribunal; •Assists the Tribunal in producing accurate, comprehensive judgements, including review of draft judgements; •Maintains both the Tribunal database and register; Assists in maintaining the Tribunal’s case law and jurisprudence databank; •Prepares reports on the work of the Tribunal to the General Assembly and other bodies, as may be mandated; •Provides guidance to junior staff; •Performs other duties as required.

Education
|

|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|

Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in law, preferably administrative, employment or public international law, including legal analysis, research and writing is required. Experience at the international level is desirable. Experience in judicial structures and precedures, and civil ligitation is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Ability to work in French is desirable. Knowlege of another official language of the UN is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
