This position is located in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Division for Sustainable Development in New York. The Sustainable Development Officer reports to the Chief of the Intergovernmental Support and Interagency Branch.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Sustainable Development Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Provides substantive support on sustainable development issues to intergovernmental bodies such as the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development, the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, notably on issues relating to the implementation of Agenda 21, the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) and the Rio+20 outcome document.
• Provides substantive backstopping to informal and formal meetings and conferences, including proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations on sustainable development issues.
• Researches, analyzes sustainable development issues and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
• Develops draft policy recommendations on sustainable development issues, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
• Supports inter-agency substantive coordination and collaborates with UN system entities through the expanded Executive Committee on Economic and Social Affairs (EC-ESA Plus) and other relevant inter-agency coordination mechanisms on the support to intergovernmental bodies and on various issues relating to sustainable development.
• Collaborates with regional commissions to organize their activities in supporting implementation of Agenda 21, the JPOI and the Rio+20 outcome at the regional level and contributing to the HLPF preparatory processes at regional level.
• Organizes and prepares written outputs on sustainable development issues, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
• Prepares speeches, briefing notes, and other inputs for presentations by senior staff on sustainable development issues.
• Participates in or represents the Division in specific inter-agency or international, regional and national conferences.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in sustainable development, international relations, economics, public policy, public administration, finance, natural resources management, law, social sciences or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development, policy analysis and intergovernmental processes. Experience in providing substantive services and drafting reports to intergovernmental bodies in the economic, social or environmental fields is desirable. Experience in undertaking activities in collaboration with entities of the UN system as well as other partners is desirable. Experience in working with national representatives in intergovernmental fora, regional institutions or other stakeholders outside own organization is desirable.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN languages is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
