The post is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, New York. The Special Assistant reports directly to the Assistant Secretary-General.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the direction of the Assistant Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management, the incumbent provides advice and support to the Assistant Secretary-General regarding policy, managerial and organizational issues as well as programme development, monitoring and evaluation; conducts research and/or consultations and develops solutions and remedial actions on specific policy issues; coordinates actions and liaises with Secretariat Units and other entities, including delegations/permanent missions of Member States; provides advice on information technology matters and keeps abreast of developments in the field of information technology, in particular the various tools used in the conference servicing areas; and undertakes ad hoc tasks as required by the Assistant Secretary-General.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international relations, public administration, business administration, management or any other relevant field. A first-level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience with the United Nations, other international organizations, or a national government. Experience with intergovernmental processes desirable. Prior experience working in the office of a senior public official and/or as a Special Assistant (or similar) to a senior public official is desirable. Experience in conference management is desirable.

|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
|
