|
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-HABITAT is the lead agency within the United Nations system for the implementation of the Habitat Agenda. UN-Habitat has strengthened its areas of work around three main areas: Urban Planning, Urban Economy and Urban Legislation. Its activities contribute to the overall objective of the United Nations system to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development within the context and the challenges of a rapidly urbanizing world. The post is located within the City Planning, Extension and Design Unit, in the Urban Planning and Design Branch of UN-Habitat.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the overall supervision of the Coordinator of the Urban Planning and Design Branch, and of the Support to Sustainable Urban Development Sector in Kenya (SSUDSK) project manager in the Regional Office for Africa and the immediate supervision of the Leader of the City Planning, Extension and Design Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties: 1.Coordinate and implement the urban planning support to intermediate cities in Kenya in cooperation with the Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development and the Kenya Municipal Programme in view of improving the outcome of county and town planning processes and the capacity of key actors for participatory urban planning and management. 2. Provide urban planning support to the other components of the (SSUDSK) projects, in particular in relation to the activities related to the urban sector actors and knowledge sharing and management in the area of urban planning, in the field of urban planning legislation and in relation to capacity building and nation-wide planning efforts. 3. Support the knowledge development and sharing activities of the Urban Planning and Design Branch, and the related partnership with urban planning schools, in particular in relation to the replication of Rapid Urban Planning Studios in other contexts and the improvement of the planning methodology and process for intermediate cities and planned cities extensions. 4. Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor for the support of the Unit work.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in architecture, urban planning, regional planning Urban management or environmental planning and management is required. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations.
|

|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
At least seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience in urban planning, social/economic sustainable development, urban development policy analysis and assessment related work is required. Experience in city level planning and capacity building in the same field are a requirement. Experience in developing countries and knowledge of recent urban planning best practices would be an asset.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the post advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of one or more other UN languages will be an advantage.

Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
