This position is located in the General Assembly Affairs Branch, General Assembly and ECOSOC Affairs Division in the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, New York. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the General Assembly Affairs Branch.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under direct supervision of the Chief of the General Assembly Affairs Branch, the incumbent:
• liaises with the Office of the President of the General Assembly, and provide direct support on issues related to the institutional memory of the General Assembly;
• reviews and monitors activities, trends and developments in the General Assembly and its subsidiary bodies and analyses and assesses political and related events within assigned area with a view to providing early advice to the Chief of the General Assembly Affairs Branch;
• prepares analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high profile matters of concern to the General Assembly or other bodies;
• prepares summaries of meetings of the General Assembly;
• arranges and participates in negotiations/consultations;
• draft notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for General Assembly-related officials and maintains contacts with delegates, staff in other UN offices and departments, and other international organizations;
• perform other related duties as required.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, or related area, of which at least five years is within the UN system or similar environment. Experience in dealing with procedures, policies and practices of the General Assembly, its subsidiary bodies or other intergovernmental bodies, is required. Experience in participating directly in the activities of the General Assembly, and in monitoring the trends and developments in the work of the Assembly is desirable.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
