The post is located in the Social Perspective on Development Branch of the Division for Social Policy and Development within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Branch.
|

|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the delegated authority of the Chief of the Social Perspective on Development Branch, the incumbent is responsible for: • Monitoring overall and sectoral developments as well as emerging issues in the socio-economic field, including follow-up activities on the World Summit for Social Development and the 24th Special Session of the General Assembly. • Conducting substantive research and preparing analytical reports, parliamentary documentation, and statements for senior officials on social development issues, with the main focus on employment and poverty eradication. • Functioning as key staff member to support the coordination and servicing of the Commission for Social Development, ECOSOC and the General Assembly and other intergovernmental meetings, as required, including by organizing panel and roundtable discussions. • Serving as the focal point for coordinating activities of the UN system related to the Second UN Decade for the Eradication of Poverty. • Providing substantive follow-up on poverty eradication issues within the UN system, and coordination on cross-cutting issues. • Maintaining dialogue with social partners, such as Governments, academia and civil society at the national, regional and international level and gather information on initiatives taken by them on the follow-up to the World Summit for Social Development and the Special Session of the General Assembly. • Planning, organizing and providing substantial servicing of expert group meetings, seminars, workshops, etc., including the identification and selection of participants, drafting background documentation, reports, policy recommendations and analytical briefs based on the outcome of such meetings. • Performing other administrative and ad hoc duties as required.

Education
|

|
|
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in social science, humanities or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in socio economic development, policy analysis, sociological research or related area. Experience in preparing research-based analytical reports is required. Experience in intergovernmental work, particularly providing substantive support to the intergovernmental process, is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include a substantive assessment, which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
|
