|
The post is located in the Social Perspective on Development Branch in the Division for Social Policy and Development of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Social Perspective on Development Branch.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief of Branch, the Social Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Social Analysis:
• Participate in the analysis of social development issues in selected areas at the global, regional and national levels; undertake empirical research and analysis of trends and developments and related policy issues relevant to the Branch's mandate, projects and initiatives; recommend proposals for inclusion in reports to intergovernmental bodies, member states.
• Liaise with officials of governments, representatives of national, regional and global organizations, including research institutes, academia, NGOs and organizations of the UN system on selected social policy issues related to the implementation of specific programmes, action plans or other initiatives, and provide advice on a range of related matters.
• Assist in the planning, organizing and servicing of technical and ad hoc expert group meeting; drafting reports and preparing summaries of meetings.
• Organize and participate in working groups, meetings, conferences, consultations with other agencies and partners on social and economic development related matters.
• Prepare various analytical reports, studies, background papers, parliamentary documents, briefings, publications and correspondence.
2. Intergovernmental support:
• Provide support to intergovernmental processes dealing with social development issues by: Preparing inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies; following intergovernmental meetings and preparing summary reports; preparing inputs to statements by members of the bureau and Secretariat staff to such meetings; assisting in the organization of panels, round tables, and other meetings on social development issues for intergovernmental processes.
• Represent the Branch at international, regional and national meetings.
3. General:
• Provide guidance to, and may supervise, new/junior staff.
• Perform other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit's services.
• Undertake on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in sociology, economics, other social sciences or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|

|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in social/economic development, policy analysis, sociological research and related area is required. Experience in programme implementation, including experience at the international level and experience servicing inter-governmental bodies is required. Experience in drafting analytical reports is highly desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
