This position is located in UNDOF Amret Al Faouar in the Office of Information and Communications Technology Services. Incumbents reports directly to the Chief Information Technology Section and indirectly to the Chief Information and Communications Technology Services.

|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the information Systems Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
NETWORK ADMINISTRATION:
• Analyses, plans, designs and supervise the implementation of network projects in accordance with Mission requirements and applicable UN policies and standards
• Reviews network configuration ensuring maximum efficiency and optimal usage of resources
• Participates in the management of network backup and security enforcement policies
• Ensures the integrity of the various internetwork connections within the missions Intra- and Extranets
• Assist on the preparation of specifications for the request of equipment and services related to the area of networking
• Assists with the implementation of new and emerging technologies for voice, video, and data integration
• Supports the design, implementation and maintenance of Data Security projects with emphasis in network security, monitoring, resourcing, and other UN standard technologies
• Coordinates with other specialists and collaborates with external partners to ensure proper connectivity of the Mission network to the Internet, corporate Intranet and other external sources
• Uses network management and monitoring tools to prepare problem-analysis reports and resources utilization data
• Works on the development and implementation of Voice over Frame Relay, Voice & Video over IP and other voice, video and data integration technologies
• Provides customer support to the Mission’s Local and Wide Area Network using mostly CISCO routing, switching and multi-services platforms
• Maintains properly administered access control lists including rights and privileges; participates in the security incident response activities
• Participates in planning, implementing, operating and maintaining security controls; performs regular vulnerability assessments of production systems to identify weaknesses and determine the need for security updates and fixes
• Participates in the actual physical installation of networks from the planning to final customer connections
• Participates and actively advise in major network implementations
• Drafts documentation and reports
• Performs other related duties as required.
SERVER/DATA CENTRE ADMINISTRATION:
• Performs the installation, configuration, testing and deployment of server systems hardware and software, to include Local Area Network infrastructure, Operating Systems (Unix, Linux, Mac OS), Electronic mail, Lotus Notes, Citrix, Database systems, Web Development software, Firewall systems, Network Services Server systems (DNS, DHCP, NFS, CIFS/SMB, mail relay, and various security software
• Assist with the administration, operation, technical support, and monitoring of server systems; undertakes complex trouble shooting of server systems
• Provides input to identify the need for new systems or re-engineering of the existing systems
• Participates in the security incident response activities; assists in the planning, implementing, operating and maintaining security controls; performs regular vulnerability assessments of production systems to identify weaknesses as well as to determine the need for updating systems with fixes and patches
• Drafts documentation and reports
• Performs other related duties as required.
ICT SECURITY:
• Manages and supervises the design, installation, operation and maintenance of a multi-user information security systems including firewalls, malware detection/prevention systems, intrusion detection/prevention, network access controls, proxy servers, VPN, encryption, url and content filtering systems in accordance with organizational technology security standards
• Assists other CITS groups with the determination of security requirements and integration of these requirements in system design and operations
• Formulates and maintains security procedures, including user identification and access control processes to specific CITS resources and data
• Acts upon all security incidents and violations, including reporting them immediately to the CITS Security Coordinator; participates in incidents management activities
• Performs regular security assessments of production CITS resources to identify potential weaknesses that could be exploited; performs risk analysis and formulate risk treatment plans
• Determines the need for updating CITS systems with fixes and patches
• Performs other related duties as required.
Other duties and responsibilities common to the specialties above include, but are not limited to:
• Providing general assistance across the various fields of ICT support services in the mission
• Being part of cross-functional teams within CITS in order to assist with ICT related projects.

Work implies frequent interaction with the following:
Technicians and Assistants throughout the mission, counterparts in other peacekeeping and special political missions, and those collocated UN Agencies and Syria and Israel; senior officers, technical staff, and end-users in user offices; sales and technical personnel of hardware/software vendors and contractors.
Results Expected:
Provides effective information systems and technology support to the mission personnel and users in installation, operation, maintenance, and service delivery of hardware, software, network services, and information security services for the mission, as well as for the other UN Agencies and Offices collocated in Syria and Israel.

Education
|
|
|
|
High school diploma or equivalent and certification/diploma of other supplemental academic qualifications or training in Information Systems and Technology are required. Industry training and certifications are desirable.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
At least eight (8) years of relevant work experience in the planning and installation of complex Information Systems, equipment, and networks, including at least three (3) years experience at the international level. Field experience in United Nations Peacekeeping missions is desirable. For this post, Applications Support expertise with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in supporting iNeed, Sharepoint and FSS Suite, as well as good knowledge of Lotus Notes and Outlook Mail are required. Experience in supervising a team of five technical experts is desirable.

French and English are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
