This post is located within the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The Secretary of the Commission reports directly to the Executive Secretary.

|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the direct supervision of the Executive Secretary, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:
Maintaining relations with Member States: 1 - Assists the Executive Secretary in developing communications strategies with ESCWA Member States; 2 - Maintains overall liaison between the secretariat of ESCWA and senior officials of the host government as requested by the Executive Secretary; 3 - Coordinates and reviews inputs for the meeting of the Executive Secretaries, meeting of the Executive Committee for Economic and Social Affairs, and meeting of the Executive Secretary with other United Nations agencies; 4 - Coordinates the servicing of other advisory and consultative bodies of the Commission, as well as ad-hoc consultative meeting convened by the office of the Executive Secretary, as required; 5 - Brings to the attention of the Commission, resolutions or recommendations of the sister regional economic commissions, the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly and follows up on the implementation of relevant resolutions. Maintains also contact with the Secretariat of the Economic and Social Council and the regional Commission's New York office at Headquarters and with member government's delegations on the performance of these tasks.
Servicing the sessions of the Commission, its subsidiary bodies and other inter-governmental meetings: 6 - Supervises and coordinates the provision of services for the session of the Commission and its Preparatory Committee, those of subsidiary committees and the Advisory Committee, including the preparation of the provisional agendas; sending out of invitations; supervising protocol functions, reviewing and revising documentation, revision of account, arranging for the distribution of documents in conformity with the six-week rule and supervising and/or review reports of these sessions; 7 - Follows up with the substantive divisions concerned on the implementation and resolutions of the Commission's recommendations and the recommendations of the Commission's subsidiary bodies and follows-up on preparation of the reports of the subsidiary bodies of the Commission.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Economics, Law or Political Science or other related field.
|
|
|

Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible relevant experience in an international organization or governmental setting including playing critical roles in inter-governmental negotiations and processes. Experience in diplomatic service, protocol or international relations is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and oral English and Arabic is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Candidates will undergo a substantive assessment and a competency-based interview. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
