|
The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.
This position is located in the Countries with Special Needs Section, in the Macroeconomic Policy and Development Division (MPDD). The Economic Affairs Officer is under the direct supervision of the Chief, Countries with Special Needs Section and the overall supervision of the Chief, MPDD.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within the delegated authority, the Economic Affairs Officer is responsible for the following functions:
• Monitors economic developments in LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS and fragile states in Asia and the Pacific region and identifies recurrent and emerging issues of concern to the United Nations.
• Designs and conducts studies of selected issues on sustainable development in LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS and draft resulting reports.
• Interprets and applies results of econometric modeling to analysis of economic prospects and policies.
• Develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to structural transformation and economic development of LDCs, LLDC s and SIDS.
• Formulates proposals on development strategies, policies and measures pertaining to LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others.
• Develops partnerships and networks in support of the LDCs, LLDCs and SIDs with their development partners
• Attends international, regional, and national meetings to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions.
• Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, capacity building activities etc. on development issues.
• Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.

Ability to conduct independent research on development gaps faced by the LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS, as verified through authoring or co-authoring of publications. Ability to determine suitability, validity and accuracy of data provided by different sources, particularly of those provided by national and international organizations in respect of LDCs, LLDCs and SIDs. Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in developing countries. Experience working in economic development issues of LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS is required.
Relevant IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and web-based applications, required.
Experience in the United Nations Common System is desirable.
Experience in the Asia and Pacific region is desirable.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
|

Qualified applicants will be evaluated through a competency-based interview and/or other assessment methods.
