|
This position is located in the Communications Campaign Service of the Strategic Communications Division, Department of Public Information. The incumbent will report to Chief of the Communications Campaign Service.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
• Conceptualize, design and execute the overall public information strategy, programme and activities on economic, social and sustainable development issues.
• Serve as lead spokesperson for the public information programme; provide technical and policy advice on highly complex public information and communications issues related to development; develop and disseminate best practices.
• Lead and direct a team of public information officers; plan and allocate work assignments; coach, mentor, and evaluate staff; participate in recruitment and selection of new staff and in the development of training programs.
• Oversee the preparation, from research to publication, of UN information products and social media content on development issues.
• Conduct sensitive liaison work with relevant substantive departments; create and maintain networks of high-level communications contacts with broadcast media, the press, governmental agencies, international institutions and other groups and organizations in civil society to promote coverage of development issues and the UN’s role; represent the organization in important meetings, conferences, events, etc.; promote joint public relations ventures.
• Contribute to development of social media communications strategies.
• Assess the overall effectiveness of the public information strategy and programmes and make needed changes in approach and technique.
• Provide diverse materials (briefings, speeches, questions and answers) for use by senior officials; develop or overall see development of high profile multi-media communications campaigns; set quality and production standards for information dissemination.
• Carries out programmatic/administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Section, including preparation of budgets, assigning and monitoring of performance parameters and critical indicators.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications and public information, journalism, development studies, or related area. Experience working in strategic communications and public information is highly desirable. Experience managing communications campaigns on economic, social and sustainable development issues at the global level is highly desirable. Experience creating and managing social media accounts on development issues is highly desirable. Experience in leading inter-agency communications campaigns and strategies is highly desirable.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|

|

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
|
