The post is located in the Industrial and Energy Statistics Section, Environment and Energy Statistics Branch, Statistics Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The incumbent reports the the Chief of the Industrial and Energy Statistics Section.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Industrial and Energy Statistics Section and within limits of delegated authority, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:
• Organizes, designs, plans and carries out the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of energy statistics data by selecting methods of data collection, selecting and implementing methods for checking collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into databases.
• Participates in the development, implementation and management of statistical databases for industrial and energy statistics.
• Participates in the development or revision of statistical concepts, definitions and classifications related to industrial and energy statistics by performing methodological research.
• Prepares draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assist in drafting relevant reports related to industrial and energy statistics.
• Organizes and participates in seminars, workshops and expert meetings on industrial and energy statistics as a technical resource person.
• Provides training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information on energy statistics.
• Guides, trains and supervises general service staff in the compilation, verification and dissemination of energy statistics data.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Proven conceptual skills in statistics including in-depth technical knowledge of the conceptual frameworks for industrial or energy statistics;
• Knowledge of the relevant international recommendations;
• Excellent analytical and evaluative skills including skills and ability to assess relevance of various data sources and data compilation methods as well as ability to formulate new strategies and technical approaches applicable to industrial or energy statistics;
• Ability to identify conceptual and practical issues and to conduct independent research including formulation of options and making conclusions and recommendations;
• K nowledge of statistical principles and practices.

• Solid computer skills and ability to apply them in statistical work, including proficiency in word and data processing and knowledge of relevant software packages; keep abreast of available technology; understand applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seek to apply technology to appropriate tasks; understand new technologies.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of official statistics data is required. Experience in the use of computerised databases is required. Experience in the area of industrial or energy statistics is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
|
|
