Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within assigned authority, the Programme Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Provide substantive secretariat support to the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, its Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and its Legal Subcommittee and Working Groups; prepare various written outputs, including drafting, editing and compiling parliamentary reports and other documents required for those intergovernmental bodies.
• Participate in or conduct the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned workshops, field missions, symposiums, panels and projects on space-related matters, in particular in the field of space policy and/or space law; liaise with relevant parties; identify and track follow-up actions.
• Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources on space-related matters; monitor latest developments relating to space activities, in particular space policy and/or space law; develop and maintain contacts with specialists in national and international space entities and academic institutions.
• Assist in the preparation and coordination of the United Nations Inter-Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities.
• Undertake outreach activities and make presentations on assigned topics and activities.
• Assist in conducting evaluation and coordinating programme performance monitoring and reporting of the Office for Outer Space Affairs as far as the Committee, Policy and Legal Affairs Section is concerned.
• Perform other duties as required.

Has good knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and practices relevant to the fields of international relations, policy and/or law relevant to space-related activities. Education
|
|
|
|
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, economics or a related field is required. Specialization in a field relevant to space policy or space law is desirable. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in international relations or international law in an international setting is required. Experience in servicing intergovernmental bodies is required. Experience in and familiarity with United Nations activities, in particular the issues discussed in the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its subsidiary bodies, is desirable. Experience in planning, organizing and conducting capacity-building activities is also desirable. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first-level university degree recognized by the United Nations.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency, is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
