This post is located in the Spokesperson’s Unit, Media Relations Section, Communications Services Branch, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The Associate Public Information Officer reports to the Spokesperson.

|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Associate Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:
• Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.
• Drafts/compiles a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.), of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media plans for high level missions and reports, notes for media briefings, video clips, web and social media content, etc.
• Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information material, such as statements of the USG and other senior officials; conducts photo and graphic research and manages the OCHA photo database.
• In consultation with others, identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
• Identifies key contacts/constituencies and opportunities for strategic partnerships to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.
• Organizes or participates in the organization of conferences, seminars, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.
• Responds to a variety of inquires and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area. Experience with multi-media production, including film editing, and producing web content is required. Experience with social media is required. Experience with managing social media for a high-profile official in a professional context is desirable.
No experience is required for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
|

Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
Special Notice
|
|
|
|
This position is funded for a finite period of one year and may be subject to extension. Extension of the appointment is subject to Extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
No experience is required for candidates who have passed a United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination.
