This position is with the Asia and the Pacific Division (APD), Department of Political Affairs. The P3 Political Affairs Officer reports to the Division Chief through his/her supervisor.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the overall guidance from the Division Chief, direct supervision by the APD Divisional Team Leader and in close interaction with other Team members, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: monitor peace and security situation in the region and in Northeast Asia in particular, focusing on preventive action, peace-making and good offices role there by the Secretary-General; prepare in-depth analysis and assessment of relevant developments in the region and countries of assignment; contribute to the preparation of policy and strategy papers, draft talking points and briefing notes, and contribute to the preparation of the Secretary-General’s and other reports as needed; prepare and participate in visits and trips of the Secretary-General and other UN senior officials to the region; liaise with UN offices, programmes, funds and agencies towards coordinated and coherent response by the UN System to the issues in question; monitor regional peace and security dynamics in a broader context of international peace and security; participate in the provision of Secretariat services to the Security Council, General Assembly and their subsidiary organs, as required; develop recommendations for preventive and peace-making action in the region by the Secretariat, as well as increased System-wide coherence with other UN mechanisms and processes in that regard; perform other related duties as required.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, conflict prevention and resolution or related area is required. Personal experience in United Nations work in the area of peace and security is highly desirable. Experience with peace and security issues in Northeast Asia is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and/or Korean is an asset.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|

|
