|
The Senior Programme Officer - Africa will be located in the Global Compact Office, Department of Management in New York. The incumbent will report to the Deputy Director and Executive Director of the Global Compact Office.
The Global Compact Office is the UN entity responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Global Compact initiative, including for management of the UN Global Compact’s name and logo, and the UN Global Compact Integrity Measures. It pursues two complementary objectives: (1) making the UN Global Compact and its principles part of business strategy and operations everywhere; and (2) facilitating cooperation among key stakeholders by promoting partnerships and other collective action in support of UN goals and priorities.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority and under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director of the UN Global Compact Office, the Senior Programme Officer - Africa will be responsible for the following:
• Provides strategic guidance to the Executive Director and Deputy Director on the development and implementation of the overall strategies of the UN Global Compact on Africa, including the policies and procedures for liaison with other organizations of the United Nations System as well as other international organizations, regional, governments and business organizations.
• Builds and maintains strategic relationships with relevant UN Agencies, UN Member States, regional organizations, African Union, civil society organizations and business associations in Africa.
• Builds and maintains strategic partnerships with companies from Africa as well as multinational corporations with operations in Africa, ensuring incremental increase in the number of business participants in the UN Global Compact and deepening responsible business practices in Africa.
• Represents the UN Global Compact at international conferences and high-level meetings on corporate sustainability and transformative partnerships in support of the Africa’s private sector development. Oversees the planning and execution of high-level meetings hosted by the UN Global Compact such as the African Private Sector Forum as well as other private-sector led meetings focusing on Africa and businesses.
• Leads the development of the UN Global Compact’s strategy on implementing a portfolio of UN Global Compact issue platforms and specialized initiatives in Africa, and plans and overseas the management of all UN Global Compact activities undertaken in Africa by collaborating with all the thematic units – Local Networks, Governance and Social Sustainability, and Participant Engagement and Environmental Sustainability. Ensures that substantive work programmes and programmed activities are carried out in a timely and coordinated fashion.
• Coordinates activities related to budget and funding for activities undertaken in relation to Africa and oversees preparation of related documents/reports (budgets, financial statements, etc.).
• Manages, guides, develops and trains staff under his/her supervision. Fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Unit and across organizational boundaries.
• Directs research and programme evaluation on the UN Global Compact’s strategic priorities in Africa, coherence of policies, corporate sustainability and transformative partnerships trends in Africa and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
• Provide high level advice and guidance to partnering organizations that seek to engage with the UN Global Compact especially on topics such as private sector engagement in Africa and corporate sustainability.
• Leads field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.
• Manages outreach activities; designs and conducts training workshops, seminars, etc., represent the UN Global Compact to advance the initiative’s mandate.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree in economics, law, political science, international relations, public administration or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of additional qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in project management, administration or related area with relevance to the UN Global Compact's programmes and mandates, including leading/managing corporate sustainability and multi-stakeholder initiatives. Experience of working on corporate citizenship issues especially as it relates to UN-business collaboration is required. Experience of working in African countries at least for two years is desirable.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable; knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
