|
The position is located in the Sales and Marketing Section, which is part of the Outreach Division in the Department of Public Information. This Section handles the sale of UN publications, and is a revenue-producing activity, meaning that expenditures are funded by the income generated from sales.
|

|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Chief of Section will be responsible for the following:
- Plans and oversees the management of activities undertaken by the Section, including the acquisition, product development and sales of United Nations Publications and data products in print and electronic form;
- Serves as a member of the UN Publications Board, contributing to policies and procedures related to publishing in the United Nations;
- Promotes the wider dissemination of UN publications through marketing, licensing and distribution arrangements; negotiates with outside partners to increase language versions and co-editions;
- Provides substantive input in the preparation of reports for presentation to intergovernmental or expert bodies, such as the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, Committee for Programme and Coordination, and the Fifth Committee of the General Assembly, as appropriate;
- Contributes to the reporting to intergovernmental bodies on budget/programme performance and income-generating activities related to the sale of publications;
- Prepares inputs for the work programme of the Division, determining priorities and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery;
- Oversees United Nations Development Business, a subscription-based portal that aggregates bidding opportunities from IGOs and governments for the private sector;
- Carries out programmatic/administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Section, including preparation of budgets, maximizing income from the sale of publications while pursuing cost-effectiveness in operations; performance parameters and critical indicators, and supervision of performance of external vendors responsible for order fulfilment, customer service, warehousing and distribution;
- Recruits staff for the Section, considering geographical representation and gender balance as well as other institutional values;
- Fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Section and across organizational boundaries;
- Participates in international, regional or national book fairs to promote the sale of UN publications;
- Performs other duties as required.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in marketing, communications, business or public administration, publishing or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in publishing, marketing or related field, including several years of experience in electronic publishing, new media, product development and sales. Management experience is required as well as experience in preparation of budgets. Experience in publishing within the UN system is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
