|
This position is located in the Aviation Safety Section within the Logistics Support Division (LSD) of the Department of Field Support (DFS) in New York. The Aviation Safety Officer will report to the Chief, Aviation Safety Section, Logistics Support Division.
|

|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions:
• Coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Regional Aviation Safety Offices.
• Communicate regularly with and provide advice and clarification to the Aviation Safety staff in field missions when required.
• Act as the Deputy and as Officer-in-Charge when the Senior Aviation Safety Officer is away.
• Develop the Section's work plan and budget.
• Contribute to the development of aviation safety related policies, guidelines and procedures.
• Prepare temporary job openings, job openings and all related selection documents as well as provide assistance and advice to Aviation Safety staff at UNHQ and the field on all personnel matters.
• Review Mission’s budgets and ensure they are in line with related financial policies, guidelines and procedures.
• Provide feedback and follow up on all internal and external audits conducted of the Section and prepare and draft responses to questions arising from audits conducted of all DFS supported Missions.
• Review all outgoing and incoming documents, provide feedback and related comments, draft responses when required and ensure adequate follow-up is conducted when necessary.
• Conduct Aviation Safety Assessment Visits to DFS supported Missions and Vendor Assessment Visits to UN approved vendors and follow up on the status of required risk mitigation measures.
• Participate in the investigation of incidents and accidents of UN chartered aircraft.
• Undertake special projects and perform other related duties as required.

Education
|
|
|
|
An advanced degree (Master's degree or equivalent) from a University or a Military establishment in Air Transportation, Aviation Engineering, Safety Management or Air Traffic Control is required. A first level university degree (or military equivalent) in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Professional Pilot License or Engineering License or Air Traffic Control License is required. Recognized certificate or diploma in Aviation Safety and Accident Investigation is required. Commercial Pilot License is desirable.

Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in air transportation or air traffic control operations, aviation safety or aviation engineering, with at least two years at the international level is required. A minimum of one year as Aviation Safety Officer is required. Experience in the technical field of aviation safety, aviation accident prevention and safety risk assessment is required. Experience in accident investigation is required. Experience working in peacekeeping or other field operations would be an advantage.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
Special Notice
|

This position is funded for a finite period of at least one year and may be subject to extension. Staff Members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
