This position is located in the Office of the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, which also supports the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Responsibility to Protect. The incumbent will report to the Senior Political Affairs Officer.
|

|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Monitor and analyse developments in the countries or region assigned, which may include but not be limited to Arabic speaking countries; alert the Special Advisers to situations where there is a risk of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing or crimes against humanity.
• Prepare advisory notes and analytical reports on situations of concern; provide expert advice to the Special Advisers on courses of action to reduce or mitigate the risk; co-ordinate with counterparts from relevant UN departments, agencies, funds and programs;
• Carry out research and analysis on matters relevant to the mandate, as required;
• Organize, manage and participate in fact-finding missions, as required;
• Draft background papers, talking points, speeches, meeting notes and correspondence for the Special Advisers;
• Develop, organise and participate in capacity building and outreach activities;
• Develop and maintain working relationships with other elements of the United Nations system, with Member States and international, regional and sub-regional organizations and with civil society in order to advance the work of the Office;
• Contribute to conferences, seminars and other forums relevant to advancing the work of the Office;
• Perform other related duties as required.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience of undertaking research and analysis on areas relevant to the prevention of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity is required. Experience of working with the United Nations, international or national organisations or in another multi-lateral environment is required. Field experience is highly desirable.
Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in English and French (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|

Extension of the appointment is subject to Extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
