The position is located in the External Communications and Media Relations Section, Public Information and Knowledge Management Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer (P4), External Communications and Media Relations Section.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Ensures implementation of information programs for multiple social media platforms and groups; to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome. • Repackages print, broadcast and online information and communications products for target audiences on social media platforms; these include press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, website, etc. • Markets and repackages official UN documentation, such as newsletters, periodicals, reports and publications via social media platforms. • Designs, develops and implements mobile marketing campaigns. • Promotes in-house social media usage, event promotion and engagement. • Serves as thematic area focal point by maintaining records on social media platform, researching and evaluating usage of evolving social media technologies, and benchmarking social media usage with relevant institutions and development leaders and thinkers. • Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses. • Manages database operations for social media platform. • Generates regular social media reports, such a as Facebook insights and advises on viral potential of topics. • Develops written content for various newsletters, publications and mass electronic communications. • Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Communication, Journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|

|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, marketing, on-line journalism, managing blogs or social media campaigns, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Practical experience at national or international levels is desirable. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognized by the United Nations.

|
Languages
|
|
|
|
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
