The position is located in the External Communications and Media Relations Section, Public Information and Knowledge Management Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer (P4), External Communications and Media Relations Section.

|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Draft targeted news releases, media alerts, advisories, op-eds, features and content for online dissemination; • Implements marking and advertising of UNECA knowledge products and advises on advertising effectiveness programmed using best available research techniques; • Keeps abreast of the changing media landscape, including advertising trends and advises on opportunities to engage targeted media; • Provides seamless repackaging of knowledge products for dissemination on UNECA blogs and other social media platforms; • Prepares and disseminates promotional materials, fact sheets, with the objective of optimizing the visibility of UNECA knowledge products; • Ensures implementation of information programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitors and reports on progress made, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome. • Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses. • Coordinates live webstreamining of press conferences and other key events; • Develops product marketing cycles of key knowledge products and liases with relevant media outlets; • Prepares and maintains web editorial calendars in coordination with the subregional offices and staff of the African Training Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP); • Oversees the development of a searchable, indexed media database; • Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, journalism, international relations or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|

|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in media relations, marketing, communications or journalism or related field. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognized by the United Nations.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
