This position is located in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Communications Services Branch. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Communications Services Branch.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Programme Officer (Head of Visual Information Unit, VIU) will be responsible for the following duties:
•Develops, implements and evaluates assigned visual information programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
•Coordinates and direct the VIU team by planning day-to-day activities, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the VIU staff will use to manage their work.
•Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources visually to support humanitarian coordination.
•Coordinates OCHA visual standard development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies ,
•Generates infographic and mapping initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets data identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
•Organizes and prepares visual design outputs for background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
•Provides infographic training to field offices, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
•Initiates and coordinates OCHA visual standard activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
•Leads and/or participates in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to OCHA field staff and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.
•Coordinates activities related to VIU budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
•Performs other duties as required.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in geography, earth sciences, information management, statistics, business administration and management, economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|

|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration, or related area. Experience in design, infographic, cartography, mapping and GIS, web design and development, information management or public information is required. Experience in information management in the context of emergency humanitarian response, crisis management, natural disaster response, or in a recovery context is required. Experience in turning complex data into a comprehensive visual presentation that facilitates effective communication of a humanitarian situation is desirable. Experience in the implementation of a visual identity of an organization and the standardization of visual products is desirable. Experience in the provision of graphic style and visual design training is desirable.
Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations.

Languages

|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantange.
|
|
|

Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
Special Notice
|
|
|
|
This position is funded for a finite period of one year and may be subject to extension. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
