This position is located in the Development Cooperation Policy Branch of the Office for ECOSOC Support and Coordination, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and reports directly to the Chief of the Development Cooperation Policy Branch.
|
|
|
|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Development Cooperation Policy Branch, Office for ECOSOC Support and Coordination, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for the:
- Review, monitor and provide advice on trends in development cooperation and in operational activities of the United Nations system, identifying emerging trends and issues of concern to the United Nations;
-Design and conduct studies on the coherence, quality, and impact of development cooperation in general;
-Design and conduct evaluations of the overall effectiveness and functioning of the United Nations system at the country level, including through country-level missions, desk and other reviews and interagency evaluations;
-Draft reports to the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council on development cooperation and on United Nations system’s operational activities for development;
-Develop draft policy recommendations about development cooperation and the operational activities for development of the United Nations system, to be considered by the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council;
-Support delegations of Member States in their consultations on these issues;
-Organize intergovernmental meetings, workshops and symposiums on development cooperation including operational activities of the United Nations system;
-Represent the Branch at the inter-agency level and with other organizations; and
-Perform other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the services provided by the Branch.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, public administration, international affairs or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the area of development cooperation. Experience in drafting analytical reports desirable. Experience in a developing country and experience related to United Nations system’s country-level development cooperation activities is also desirable. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations.

Languages
|
|
|
|
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed
by a competency-based interview.
|
|
|
|
