This position is located in the News Services Section of the News and Media Division of the Department of Public Information. The Information Systems Assistant will serve as team leader for the Section’s IT and technical staff, responsible for a wide range of IT and web-related development and maintenance functions, under the general guidance of the Chief of the News Services Section of the News and Media Division.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Information Systems Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
• Providing support for the Section’s computer information systems and databases including security and data backup and recovery; troubleshooting for various applications. As needed, installing computer application systems software and hardware; monitoring systems and producing monitoring reports.
• Serving as team leader in projects dealing with the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and maintenance of web-based and simple application systems; liaising with users to define and specify requirements.
• Drafting correspondence and communications, including work plan revisions and other related issues, preparing contributions for a variety of periodic reports.
• Providing guidance and training to new/junior staff; planning day-to-day work to cover contingencies and supervising other staff as required.
• Working in a deadline-oriented environment, developing and implementing programmes, systems, interactive elements and enhancements, multimedia products and applications for the UN News Centre web portal and associated pages, using multiple programming languages and multimedia software.
• Designing and developing dynamic web pages for news and feature products, using web authoring tools and graphics applications, established UN standards, IT technologies and tools, and typically using more than one programming language. Creating and integrating JavaScript, AJAX, ASP, PHP and CSS; writing advanced SQL queries; testing, maintaining and modifying SQL databases; testing for multi-browser support.
• Preparing and uploading multimedia materials for on-line posting; researching and archiving photos; monitoring multiple sources of UN news and alerting editorial staff to arising issues and changing priorities as necessary, occasionally working beyond regular hours to meet deadlines related to news and special projects.

Education
|
|
|
|
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally administered test at United Nations Offices away from Headquarters. Supplementary course work/training in website-related programmes, including database development and web design, highly desirable.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of 10 years professional experience in website programming, development and design, and in managing database-driven platforms is required. Professional experience working with FTP, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash animation, graphics and other tools and multimedia applications software is required. Professional experience in database administration and maintenance (SQL), and programming and format encoding (ASP, PHP, CSS, Javascript, HTML) is required. Professional experience with accessibility-compliant multimedia and digital asset management systems, tools and techniques, formats and standards is required. Demonstrated ability to professionally meet the demands of a deadline-oriented environment is required; experience in a web-based daily news environment is highly desirable. Experience working with public information for the United Nations or another intergovernmental organization is highly desirable. Experience with usage measurement tools such as Google Analytics is highly desirable. Supervisory experience desirable.

Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
|

Assessment
|

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
