The position is located in the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, Office of Legal Affairs. The incumbent will report to the Principal Legal Officer and/or to the Senior Geographic Information Systems Officer.
|

|
Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Information Technology Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
Specialized information technology support:
• Updates geographic information systems (GIS) software licenses;
• Ensures that GIS software installations and updates are being delivered correctly;
• Prepares, maintains, and updates files (electronic and paper) and internal databases.
• Ensures that the network security arrangements are in place, as defined by the supervisor;
• Provides information technology support to the members of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf;
• Provides basic training to end-users on the use of standard systems and applications;
• Liaises with ITSD for maintaining the efficient and reliable operations of server systems.
• Collects various statistics on the performance and reliability of server systems, and produces pertinent reports.
• Performs tasks related to equipment replacement, equipment installation/de-installation, software installation, creating standard images, LAN connection, returns to stock, site surveys, etc.
• Diagnoses and resolves any hardware, software, or connectivity problem with minimum delay.
• Addresses escalated problems and monitor to resolution. Detects problem patterns and recommend solutions. Escalates problems/tasks to the appropriate parties in accordance with established procedure.
• Receive, unpacks, and inspects all incoming assets.
• Prepares and releases equipment for service requests.
• Monitors inventory levels and initiates procurement when low thresholds are reached.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Standard administrative support:
• Conducts basic research on assigned issues, using existing files and alternative sources (e.g. computer-assisted searches using the intranet, internet or other databases);
• Provides general office support services, process, draft, edit, proofread and finalize for signature/approval a variety of correspondence and other communications, specialized legal documentation; schedules appointments/meetings, monitors deadlines.
• Ensures that all correspondence and other documentation is appropriately filed, registered and followed up as necessary in the digital information management system.
• Assists in the maintenance of a body of reference files, both paper and electronic, to ensure rapid retrieval of critical information;
• Assists in servicing of meetings;
• Perform other ad hoc duties as assigned.

Competencies

• Professionalism: Knowledge of information technology and applications, including computer system networks and geographic information systems. Knowledge of the Environment Systems Research Institute (ESRI) suite of GIS products is desirable. Good technical skills, ability to conduct network maintenance, provide server services and user support. Ability to perform a broad range of administrative functions. Education
|
|
|
|
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away.
|

|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
Seven years of experience in information technology preferably applied in geographic information systems.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|

Competency-based Interview and/or other assessment method.

This position is for local recruitment.
Passing the New York Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Headquarters at New York. To make arrangements to take this test, you may bring in person a copy of your completed Personal History Profile to the General Services and Related Categories Staffing Unit (GSRCSU), United Nations Secretariat, located at One United Nations Plaza (at corner of 1st Avenue and 44th Street), Room DC1-200. GSRCSU receives applicants every Wednesday (except public holidays) between 10.00 am and 12.00 Noon. Persons wishing to take the ASAT are pre-screened and, if successful, scheduled to sit the ASAT at a later date.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers In accordance with established rules and procedures.
