These temporary positions are located in United Nations (UN) Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) response field missions in Africa, including those UN Clinics administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). They report to the Chief Medical Officer. Although working in countries affected by the Ebola outbreak, or neighbouring regions, these positions are not primarily involved in Ebola Treatment Units. However, each clinic may receive walk-in patients who meet case criteria. Isolation, holding and transfer capability is the intended scope of practice for these posts.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: Provide Laboratory Examination services to the EVD mission and UN Agency personnel; The basic laboratory services include Haematological study (Full blood count, ESR and blood grouping), Biochemistry (LFT, RFT, BSL, Uric Acid, Serum Enzymes), Serological test (VDRL, Dengue, HIV); Routine urine and stool analysis, Microbiology and Parasite logy (Malaria and other common infections); handling and testing of highly bio-hazardous specimens. Assist periodic entry and exit medical examinations to EVD mission personnel; Sample collection from the referred patients from the OPD and the wards as requested by the doctors and provide analysis reports accordingly; Sample collection and referral to higher centres and their follow up; Basic repair and maintenance of the laboratory equipment; Patient record management; Inventory and requisition of laboratory supplies and equipment; Establish good working relationship with National Laboratory and Blood Bank; Assist the CMO in Medical and Casualty Evacuations of EVD mission personnel; Participate in various other activities launched by the Medical Services as requested by the CMO.

Education
|
|
|
|
Laboratory Technician Diploma or equivalent in Laboratory Science. Technical training in medical laboratory. A valid driver’s license is required.
|

Work Experience
|
|
|
|
At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in laboratory analysis.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. . Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
