These positions are located in United Nations (UN) Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) response field missions in Africa, including those UN Clinics administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Nurses usually report to the Chief Medical Officer.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Within delegated authority, the Nurse FS-5 will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic, and may not be performed by all Nurses at the FS-5 level):
Clinical Duties:
• Responds to emergency calls and assists Medical Officers in providing adequate care; ensures effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members, and colleagues as appropriate; documents case findings.
• Performs diagnostic and screening tests such as: ECG, x-rays, laboratory (blood and urine), and other tests as required.
• Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; provides care/advice accordingly or facilitates referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician, as indicated.
• Ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments. Instructs on the content and potential uses of the travel kit.
• Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs; participates in work environment assessment, e.g. office ergonomics, and addresses other occupational health issues, with special emphasis to the prophylaxis of the relevant diseases of the outbreak,
Medico-administrative duties:
• Acts as Head Nurse.
• In a timely manner, prepares an accident report and fills out Headquarters’ forms to ensure proper submission of the claims to ABCC under Appendix D to Staff Rules.
• Trains medical and other UN staff in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
• Ensures that medical instruments are properly sterilized.
• Ensures proper filing of medical and other records.
• Evaluates, orders and maintains an efficient inventory and stock control of medications/vaccines and other medical supplies and equipment.
Supervisory Duties:
• Acts as Head Nurse and supervises the work of other nurses.
General:
• Performs other related duties as required.

Competencies

Professionalism:
Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing. Formal training in CPR and, preferably, in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations. Knowledge of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them. Education
|
|
|
|
Registered Professional Nurse who is a graduate of either an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Programme (University) or an accredited Diploma Programme (4 years). Certificates in ECG, CPR or Basic Life Support is an asset.
|
|

|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
At least 8 years of progressively responsible clinical experience in general nursing, Intensive Care and health administration. Supervisory experience in mission administration is an asset. Knowledge and understanding of relevant UN administrative policies and procedures is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
Fluency in spoken and written English is required; knowledge of a second UN language is an advantage and sometimes a requirement. Fluency in French may be required.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

The United Nation Secretariat maintains rosters of qualified and available candidates to fill anticipated temporary assignments in United Nations (UN) medical facilities in the field, including UN Clinics administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The purpose of this job opening is to attract a list of qualified candidates for inclusion in the roster for Registered Nurses for immediate deployment on temporary positions in Africa. Although working in countries affected by the Ebola outbreak, or neighbouring regions, these positions are not primarily involved in Ebola Treatment Units. However, each clinic may receive walk-in patients who meet case criteria. Isolation, holding and transfer capability is the intended scope of practice for these posts.
