|
This post is located in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (OSRSG) on Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC). The mandate and work of the Office derives from General Assembly Resolution 51/77 and subsequent General Assembly resolutions, as well as successive Security Council resolutions on children and armed conflict. The incumbent will report to the Special Assistant/Chief of Office and the SRSG-CAAC depending on the assignment.

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Under delegated authority, the Communications Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Support the development and implementation of media and outreach strategies to engage key constituencies, and be responsible for positioning CAAC issues in the communications arena, which includes website content, and the production and dissemination of information materials.
Draft articles for the SRSG and be responsible for day-to-day liaison with the media, including responding to queries, organizing media activities, and media monitoring.
Help track issues related to children affected by armed conflict using a wide range of open source media.
Broker and support press appearances and interviews by the SRSG and OSRSG staff, assist in coordinating media responses, provision of substantive input for press statements, etc., attend interviews, draft talking points and briefing notes and when necessary and as authorized serve as spokesperson for the Office.
Organize special events including brown bag lunches, seminars, etc., aimed at engaging partners, and creating visibility and momentum with Member States.
Organize the drafting, production and distribution of information material and provide communications advice and support to the OSRSG on public information issues, methods and approaches inlcuding new media.
Undertake other communication efforts in support of CAAC issues as needed.
Participate in communication forums at Headquarters and liaise on a regular basis with the office of the Spokesperson, DPI, DPKO, DPA, UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, OHCHR, OSRSG/VAC, etc., and with communication officers in other UN bodies as required.
Solicit pro bono assistance for outreach activities.
Manage a small team working on communications related activities.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Masters Degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, public relations or in a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|
|
|
Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or related area is required. International experience in public and media relations is also required. Experience with web-based communication technology and new media strategies is desirable. Experience with the United Nations, or in a United Nations Common System organization or other international government organization is desirable.

|
Languages
|
|
|
|
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French or another UN official language is desirable.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
|

Extension of the appointment is subject to Extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
